Tertiary EFL Students’ Learner Autonomy: The Roles of Teachers in the Classroom

Learner autonomy has been considered the central aim of education because its significant role in enabling students to develop into successful lifelong learners. In modern times, have many opportunities learn outside classroom, ideal context for learner development. Therefore, research about development out-of-class learning needs receive more focus, especially Vietnam. Based on sociocultural theory as theoretical framework, current aims explore potential promoting EFL tertiary students’ through teachers’ roles classroom. Data collected from answers a questionnaire and (N=709) suggested correlations between factors situational, behavioral, psychological dimensions teachers resource, an evaluator, controller, instructor, facilitator, co-learner The follow-up semi-structured in-depth group interviews (N=35) revealed that mediated relationship were motivation, teacher autonomy, trust, care. These results help bridge in-class provide pedagogical implications foster context.
